In the first two years, I was required to choose a range of courses, and during these years I studied Sanskrit, Archaeology and Linguistics in addition to Anthropology. In the latter two years, the focus is upon the chosen degree subject, in this case Social Anthropology. There is some flexibility in specialisation within this, and I have been particularly interested in the anthropology of museums, the study of crafts and material culture, and economic and political anthropology.
In the summer of 1997, I conducted fieldwork research in Honolulu, Hawai'i. This was for my dissertation, a substantial piece of independent work, which I submitted in December 1997. The subject of my research was the contemporary crafts of Native Hawaiians. I looked at the impact of government support for these. In particular, I studied the assistance given by the museum to people interested in studying and practising traditional Native crafts, such as weaving, cloth-making, and carving.
I am also fairly skilled photographer and printer, and am familiar with the manipulation of graphics on computers. Some samples of my photographic work are available on the web. This web site also provides examples of my graphics work. I have a full, clean, driving licence.
