Diane's House
As part of an anthropology project on material culture in people's houses,
I did a photographic documentary of Diane's house. The kind of things
we wanted to draw out in the work was the consistent selection of certain
styles of object and decoration.
This is the kitchen range, lit by flash and candle, and the scullery.
The ceramic kitchen sink was fitted to replace a stainless steel one. Although
the new sink suits the style of the flat better, it is also a bit less
practical. Apparently, crockery is a bit more prone to break in it.
Myself and my friend Daisy interviewed Diane about the things that
she kept in her flat, how she arranged her life and so on.Then I went round
and photographed things that illustrated some of the themes she had spoken
about in the interview. The finished project involved a hectic afternoon
of printing up loads of stuff, then a weekend of cutting and pasting text
and images (not on a computer, but by hand). Still, the finished
project looked pretty smart.
